Memic Project

Memic Project is an interdisciplinary initiative that blends dance, theatricality, music, and visual storytelling to create immersive, emotionally resonant experiences. Drawing inspiration from mime, puppetry, and graphic novels, Memic crafts performances that intertwine humor, fantasy, and deep emotional undercurrents.

At the heart of the project lies an exploration of exaggerated physicality, reminiscent of cartoons and comic book characters, as a means of expressing the complexities of the human condition. Through choreography, character embodiment, and surreal visual aesthetics, Memic builds a space where abstraction meets narrative, and where emotion is felt as vividly as it is seen.

Central to the movement quality is Roberta Maimone’s developed method, MEM, a symbol of fluidity and memory. MEM emphasizes how movement can flow seamlessly and evoke emotional memories, exploring how artistic forms, like those seen in comic books, can express genuine emotions and forge a deep connection with the audience. This approach is valuable both for individuals seeking personal well-being and for professionals pursuing creative development.

Not only a performance platform, Memic Project is a space of radical openness, where identities are not confined by labels, and where queerness is not only welcomed, but celebrated. It is a creative sanctuary for exploring the act of simply being, free from imposed roles and expectations. Within a distinct aesthetic, movement language, and style, Memic invites audiences and performers into a defined structure, yet emphasizes that freedom comes from playing within that structure.

The creative process is as interdisciplinary as the performances themselves, integrating live drawing, sketching, and conceptual music composition from the very beginning of each work. This fusion nurtures a richly layered experience, shaped by constant collaboration and experimentation.

Memic Project was founded by Roberta Maimone, in collaboration with Clara Cozzolino for the music department and Claudia Quaglia for the graphic and comic-inspired visual elements. Memic Project’s work has been featured in prestigious events such as NederlandsDansDagen 2023 and the International Choreography Competition Hannover 2024.
